What is SSR?
SSR in our classroom stands for self-selected reading or free-choice reading.
We read, analyze, summarize, infer, discuss, blog, book rave, and share our love of reading and learning with others!
According to the International Reading Association and National Council of Teachers of English, "[t]he goals of independent reading are to practice a smoothly operating reading process, to exercise choice, and develop reading interests" (Read Write Think, 2014). Our goal is to not only develop reading skills but fall in love with reading!
SSR Expectations
AR @ SHS
Accelerated Reader is a national program rewarding students for their development of reading habits outside the classroom. AR is individualized based on a student's average reading goal, reading level, and reading quiz grade that is used to assess comprehension. We are looking forward to using AR to help us find "the one" book that will jump start our reading journey.

SSR Expectations
- Students will be expected to read at least 30 minutes a day in order to complete their independent reading requirements. Reading Conferences will be scheduled with the student, myself, or librarian (Mr. Muench) to establish clear, individualized reading goals.
- Students will strive to meet the following AR goals each marking period: AR points, 85% or above on AR quizzes, and an individualized, reading level goal based on their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD).
- Please be advised- SSR books are based on student choice with adult supervision. There is a possibility that some of the young adult literature might contain mature uses of language and themes. Students are encouraged to select books within the high school library that are age appropriate and within their zone of proximal development (appropriate reading levels). SSR books will posted under SSR Participation on Skyward for parents to reference as well as with the HS Librarian. If you feel a book is inappropriate for your child, they are able to select an alternative read without penalty.
