Directions:
- Have a meeting
with your news team: Journalist #1, Journalist #2, News Reporter. Discuss the
following:
- Theme of your
Newspaper
- News Story #1
Topic (What Journalist #1 will write about)
- News Story #2
Topic (What Journalist #2 will write about)
- Editorial (What
you will write about- opinion piece)
- Assign the News
Reporter to video record at least 2-4 interviews of classmates. Carefully
select the classmates. Receive their permission to be filmed.
- Document the
team’s meeting on a piece of paper. Put in your portfolio.
- Theme of your
Newspaper
- As a group, read
“Understanding a Hard News Article”. This is the format of the News Stories.
- Allow group members to work on their assignments
independently. You are there to help them if needed.
- Begin to read
“Understanding Editorials”
- Read “Examining
an Editorial”
- Review “Writing
and Editing an Editorial”
- Begin to Plan
your Editorial. Use at least 1 or 2 interviews in your story. Include at least
5 interview questions with answers. Put in your portfolio.
- Complete the
“Planning an Editorial” graphic organizer. Put it in your portfolio.
- Check-in with
your Journalists to review their progress. Proofread their News Stories using
the Collins Writing Revision & Editing Symbols. Make sure they stick to the
FACTS and do NOT include opinions.
- Begin to
write your article online using the following resource: http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/student-interactives/printing-press-30036.html?tab=5#tabs
- Work with your team to compile all the articles and CREATE a newspaper
that includes pictures, 2 news articles, and an editorial. If there is time,
include additional features.
- Tape the News
Reporters Reports or allow a Journalist to tape the Reports.
- Give Mrs. Copy
the entire newspaper by May 12th. You will pass them out during the
Mock Trial.
